How to Make an Irish Mule

When St Patrick’s Day rolls around, we love nothing more than celebrating this glorious day with fun, food, drinks and friends. One of our favourite drinks for raising a glass to the Irish comes in the form of a twist on an old classic: the Irish Mule. Based on the original recipe of the Moscow Mule, the Irish Mule turns to Irish whiskey instead of vodka for a spirited kick.

History of the Mule

When you look at the recipe of the Mule, you’ll see that it’s very simple in it’s creation: a base spirit, ginger beer, citrus and ice. Mix them together, and you have your Mule. Where you go from here is up to you!

The Moscow Mule, from which the Irish Mule is based off, was pioneered in Manhattan in the 1940s when a couple of enterprising friends combined the smooth taste of vodka with the spicy kick of ginger beer and added a squeeze of lemon for balance and zing. The drink was christened the Moscow Mule, and whether you believe that story or not, all you really need to know is that the Mule today is here to stay –it’s truly delicious!

 

The Irish Mule Recipe

This charming drink doesn’t require a whole lot of skill or finesse to bring it together – it’s very simple!

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (12.7 fl oz. ea.) Bundaberg Ginger Beer
  • 2 oz. Irish whiskey
  • Juice of half a lime
  • Lime slices and a mint sprig to garnish
  • Ice

Method

If you want a traditional Irish Mule, mix it in a copper mug. But a tumbler will also do just fine. Fill your glass with ice, and pour your whiskey over the ice. Add your lime juice, top with Bundaberg Ginger Beer and stir gently to mix. Garnish your drink with a lime slice and tuck your mint sprig in at the side for an aromatic end to your drink.

 

Party Tricks and Tips for Making the Perfect Irish Mule

When you’re hosting a party, it can sometimes be tough for you to get around to all of your guests and spend enough time with everyone. You might find yourself busy in the kitchen preparing a round of nibbles or mixing a round of drinks for guests, instead of chatting with your friends, which can be a real bore.

While there’s not a lot you can do to save yourself time with heating up food (short of hiring a catering company!), there are certainly some things you can do to save time with your drinks.

 

Tip One: Make a make-your-own Mule station

This is a classic hack for any savvy party-planner looking to save some time – and makes it fun for guests to get involved. A Mule station is super easy to make – all you need is a big bucket of ice, a bunch of Irish Whiskey, Vodka, or other liquor bottles in the cooler, some garnishes pre-prepared, and plenty of cold Bundaberg Ginger Beer on ice. Your guests will love being able to get hands-on with their drinks. Plus, they can mix it to their own taste!

 

Tip Two: Pre-prepare your Irish Mule Drinks in Pitchers

When you’re looking to save time ahead of your party, why not pre-prepare your Irish Mules? You can make up a few of batches in pitchers and then just add ice when serving. Your guests won’t be able to get enough of the cool refreshing taste and the spicy sweetness of Bundaberg Ginger Beer.
